Throwback Thursday: Walnut Grove Minnesota

This article is going to be part of a series of trips or destinations that I have been to in the past. One of the main reasons why I started this blog was because years ago I started keeping a travel journal. This blog has become my new travel journal so to speak. I have many stories and places written down that I really want to share so here goes…

Dear Adventure Avenue,

I went to Walnut Grove Minnesota way back in July 2012. Now for those of you who have no idea where I am talking about, Walnut Grove is one of the places that Laura Ingalls Wilder lived and wrote one of her books, On the Banks of Plum Creek, about. The TV show Little House on the Prairie was set in the town of Walnut Grove; however, it was not filmed in this small town.

Some say I’m a little odd to enjoy Little House on the Prairie so much, but the history and life surrounding Laura Ingalls Wilder has always been so fascinating to me. As a kid, I even dressed up as Laura for Halloween and would take sneak a bonnet with me to elementary school. So yeah… I was a bit obsessed with Little House to say the least.

Look at that time stamp…

Walnut Grove is a very small town, so if you’d like to stay in or near the town, a bed and breakfast is your best bet. (Although if you’re a camper, there are campsites). The bed and breakfast I stayed at was located in the neighboring town of Tracy, but unfortunately it is no longer open.

The Must Do List

  1. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. The museum holds things from the TV series of Little House on the Prairie, as well as things from Laura’s life.
  2. Visit the sight where Laura’s dugout home was. There’s an area marked off where the dugout was.
  3. Wade through Plum Creek. I enjoyed pretending to be Laura and sticking my feet in the water. We even saw the rock that is said to be the one Laura talks about in her books.
  4. See a show. The Wilder Pageant is an outdoor play that shows life in Walnut Grove in the 1840s.
  5. Go for a swim in Lake Laura. Lake Laura is a man-made lake close to Walnut Grove. I quite enjoyed going for a swim to escape the hot weather.

I believe Grand-mere and I went on a bus tour where we saw the rock, the dugout sight, and learned the general history of the town.

I love Walnut Grove not just because of its Laura Ingalls Wilder significance, but also because of the relaxing nature of being in such a small town. And after all these years, I still remember and treasure that trip.

Signing Off,

A
