Dear Adventure Avenue,
When I first heard about Butterfly Flower Pea Tea I was intrigued. Could a tea really change color by just adding a squeeze of lemon juice? And that pretty blue to purple color – surely there must be some sort of artificial coloring used, right?
Let me tell you it works! And there is no food coloring added – it’s just tea and lemon! Oh and did I mention it’s caffeine free? For me that is a bonus because I cannot do caffeine in the afternoon (unless of course I want to be up all night).
But onto today’s recipe!
What you’ll need:
- One Lemon
- Butterfly Pea Tea Bags (I got this brand)
- Sugar
- Ice
- Water
- A mug/teapot (I used a Death Star teapot, but they don’t sell it anymore. This BB-8 teapot is very similar to it!)
- Glass cup for final product so you can see the magic
Steps & Instructions
1. Boil or heat up your water. (I used an electric kettle).
2. Put hot water in a mug or a mini teapot like my Death Star one.
3. Steep one tea bag for 5-15 minutes. You can stick it in the fridge to start cooling it off if you want to. The longer you steep it the darker the blue will be.
4. Cut the lemon into wedges while the tea is seeping.
5. After steeping, remove the tea bag and squish out all the water in it. (Be careful because the water may still be hot).
6. Add ice to completely fill your glass cup.
7. Pour tea over the ice.
8. Squeeze a lemon wedge into the tea and watch the magic happen. (See my video at the bottom of this post).
9. Add more lemon and/or sugar to taste. (I ended up adding about 2 teaspoons of sugar to mine).
The tea tastes a little earthy which leads to a bit of an after taste. To be honest, I don’t really care for that taste, but I feel kind of like a scientist when I make it. With that said, I am in the process of creating a recipe that includes the same magical color change, but tastes a lot better! Stay tuned for that!
Until next time,
A
