Dear Adventure Avenue,
With this whole quarantining thing – meaning there aren’t many things that one can go out and do (although thankfully stuff is starting to open!)- I went outside and started gardening.
There are already some plants in place that are supposed to produce goodies to eat. Unfortunately, some of those plants don’t want to produce.
This lime tree has produced exactly 2 not very juicy limes in about 8 years. Granted it was in a pot for half its life, but still.
Next to the lime tree are the blackberries which have decided they are going to take over that side of the yard.
The blackberries are the one thing already in place that always produces.
Then there is the apple tree that has been around for a few years now. It hasn’t produced anything yet, but hopefully this is the year! It is just now starting to get its leaves back.
I seem to have the worst luck with mint. Mint is supposed to be something that grows like a weed, but it always seems to die when ever I try to grow it. Well, that is until now! My mint is finally starting to grow!
I love tomatoes, so my backyard garden would not be complete without at least one tomato plant. It already has some baby tomatoes on it!
Then there are the plants that I started from seed: My zucchini.
My big zucchini patch is doing very well and I expect it to start producing in a couple weeks. If all goes well, I am going to have zucchini coming out of my ears! Good thing I love zucchini!
I have always liked the idea of growing my own food. It is amazing to think that one little bag of seeds can become something so much bigger. It isn’t always as easy as just throwing some seeds in the ground. There’s the struggle with disease, bugs, or like in my case, mice who ate all my little cabbage sprouts and one zucchini, but at the end of the day it’s pretty awesome to have fruits and veggies that you’ve grown yourself.
Until next time,
A
