Best Things to do in Salem, Massachusetts

Dear Adventure Avenue,

Since it is Halloween, I have decided to share some of the best things to do in Salem, Massachusetts. For those of you who do not know, Salem is a city where witch trials took place. (The Crucible is a stage play that is based on this. I actually found that because I had read it a few months before, I had a better understanding of the events that went on in the town.)

Another thing I should note is that Salem is actually trying to hide its witch culture, which I find a little ironic because I believe that that is what brings in most of their tourism business, but I’m getting off track here…

The Best Things to do in Salem:

  1. The Witch House– This building is where one of the witch trial judges lived. One thing I found interesting was these cakes that were made to discover one’s true love. The ingredients were flour, salt, and… wait for it… urine
  2. Ghost Tour- When I was there I went with Spellbound Tours, but I know there are many to choose from (and they do book fast). In addition to ghosts (which given that the town has certainly experienced its fair share of death, there are a lot), vampires were also talked about.
  3. Visitor’s Center- this is a good place to go if you need to cool off. There is the option to do a walking tour, but if you’re going to be going on the Ghost tour you don’t need to do the walking tour in the heat of the day. I recommend going to see the movie in the nice air conditioned room because it’ll explain all the history for you, so that when you go and explore other sites, you’ll have a good foundation.
  4. Salem Witch Trial Memorial- You can see stones with names of when the people died during the witch trials
  5. N.Y. Pizza & Deli- I know it’s not in New York, but this place has delicious pizza and it is a great place to eat that won’t break the bank.
  6. Custom House– this house was used by U.S. Custom services until the 1930s. Be sure to check out the Public Stores behind the building to see some cargo that may have had to stop there.
  7. The House of the Seven Gables– This was actually my favorite things that I did in Salem. This house has a secret passage around the fireplace that you actually can take up to the attic. At this site, there are also other buildings that are worth it to check out, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthplace.

Salem is a quaint little seaside town, and I enjoyed the time I spent there. Did I miss any great attractions?

Happy Halloween,

A
