Dear Adventure Avenues,
I recently decided to make myself some handkerchiefs. Why did I feel the need to make them? Well, I wanted to practice a little bit of embroidery, I had fabric lying around, and I thought why not make something somewhat useful, so I made some hankies!
Are they the prettiest things in the world? Let’s just say their sides aren’t all even, but they’re just a reusable and washable tissue.
Materials
- I used two types of fabric: cotton (from an old sheet I’d dyed for another project) and this cute cactus flannel print I’d bought ages ago because it was cute. I think the flannel side is nicer because it’s softer, so you could definitely use it for both sides.
2. Sewing Machine – or a needle and thread, but that’ll take a lot longer.
3. Thread – I use this brand
4. Embroidery Thread – if you want to embroider any of your handkerchiefs
Instructions
1. Measure out your handkerchiefs to your desired size. Mine were about 8.5 inches by 8.5 inches, but the sizing definitely varied. You will need two squares per handkerchief.
2. After you cut out two squares, put right sides together. (The right side is the one with the pattern).
2.5 – If you’re going to embroider now would be the time to do so. Just make sure you leave enough space for the seam so you don’t end up sewing over your embroidery.
3. With right sides together, sew around the edges of your squares, leaving a gap as shown in the picture below. I chose to clip my corners to make the corners nicer on my hankies.
4. Right side out the handkerchief by pulling the fabric through the hole you left.
5. Once you right side out it, there will be a hole. You can either hand sew it so there aren’t any seam lines, or sew around the whole thing, closing the hole.
6. After you sew around the whole thing, your hankies are done!
Now you have your very own reusable and washable handkerchiefs!
Until next time,
A
