Huntington Beach 2020 Day 2 – A Mini Vacation

Dear Adventure Avenue,

My family and I were planning on taking a week-long vacation to Hawaii. We were going to Oahu to see Pearl Harbor. Then we were going to head over Maui. Unfortunately, there was still a 14 day quarantine, so we could go to Hawaii – we’d just be stuck in our room the entire time. Instead we chose to go to Huntington Beach – a destination that wasn’t an ocean away. This is the second day of our three day adventure. Check out Day 1 if you missed it.

Breakfast

We went down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. I ordered eggs and toast with a cup of hot mint tea. My dad got the same as me, but with coffee instead of tea.

My mom enjoyed an omelette with sauteed onions and avocado with Diet Coke. My brother got pancakes and the most beautiful (and delicious) plate of fruit.

Fun and Games

It was still a little bit too cold to go to the beach or to the pool so we decided to stay in the room for a bit and play cards. We played a game that I call Pawns, but I looked it up online and it’s also called Nertz. It’s basically fast solitaire and super fun! We also played Rummy.

Shopping and Lunch

It was getting late in the day, so we were debating on going to the beach or eating lunch first. We ended up deciding to go to lunch first so that we could spend more time at the beach.

We walked down to Main Street to try a new sandwich shop. Though, we stopped at the Huntington Beach Surf Shop so my dad could buy some new discounted flip flops. The sandwich shop was Sessions.

My dad and I shared a Chicken pesto sandwich, and my mom got a tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic vinegar sandwich with pickled radishes (they tasted like onions).

Both sandwiches came on a French roll. The ingredients were super fresh! And most importantly, both were SUPER good!

Lunch Dessert

After we ate our sandwiches at a table in the Pacific City mini mall, we stopped at Popbar. Popbar is a gelato bar place where they dip your bar into chocolate and then a topping of your choice.

I chose coconut gelato dipped in dark chocolate dipped in coconut. It was delicious!

My brother went chocolate all the way- chocolate gelato, chocolate dipped, and chocolate sprinklers. Everyone enjoyed their bars.

Beach

When we got back to the hotel, we threw our suits on and headed down to the beach. We stopped at the hotel towel hut to pick up towels, chairs, and sand toys. My dad and I also brought our boogie boards down with us.

When we reached the sand, we applied our sunscreen and dipped our toes in the slightly cold ocean. I decided to put my wetsuit on so that the cold wouldn’t bother me as much. Then my dad and I went boogie boarding.

The ocean was a bit on the strong side. I wiped out at least 3 times! The last wave I caught disconnected my boogie board strap from my board.

Pool

After the beach, we stopped at the pool for a little rinse off before heading back up to the room.

Dinner at the Hyatt

Lovely ambience at the Hyatt

We went over to the Hyatt (which is right next door) for a nice dinner. Mere joined us for dinner too! We sat outside in a little courtyard. The weather was perfect. I had an unblended virgin pina colada (more on that in a later post).

My mom and I split a delicious tomato mozzarella salad and a steak.

My brother and dad also had steaks. Mere had lamb chops.

Room Switch

Beautiful sunset!

We walked back to the room (and got slightly lost- we just went in the wrong door…. oops!) my brother and I were playing PUBG on our phones when all of a sudden we started smelling something.

And it wasn’t very pleasant.

We soon realized that our neighbors had decided to start smoking some pot and the smell was seeping into our room. Mind you we’re in a nonsmoking hotel so this behavior is definitely not allowed!

There was no way we were going to be able to sleep comfortably, so the front desk was called and we were assigned a new room.

At least the new room is up a couple more floors, and…

A better view…

Signing off,

A
