Things Even I Can Do: Descaling a Tankless Water Heater with a Chromex Kit

Dear Adventure Avenues,

Today’s post is a guest post from Things Even I Can Do all about how to descale a tankless water heater using a Chromex Kit. Thing Even I Can Do is a great YouTube channel to learn how to fix things that may need to be fixed around your house. Check them out here!

Hey Everybody! It’s Steve, from Things Even I Can Do!

Today, I will be sharing a list of steps that goes along with my latest YouTube video about descaling a tankless water heater with a Chromex Kit. That video can be found here, linked.

The steps are laid out below, but there is also a PDF that you can download by clicking the below button!

Tankless Descale Steps

  1. Shut off Gas Supply.
  2. Disconnect the Power.
  3. Shut off incoming water from Cold Side (blue).
  4. Close outgoing water from Hot Side (red).
  5. Remove Service Valve caps on hot and cold sides.
  6. Connect Blue Hose to the cold side Service Valve.
  7. Connect Red Hose to the hot side Service Valve.
  8. Direct the hoses into the bucket.
  9. Open the Cold Service valve.
  10. Open the Hot Service valve.
  11. Drain residual water from the tank.
    — Wait 3-5 minutes for all water to drain from the tank through the hoses. Water flow should stop
completely. If it doesn’t stop, ensure you have fully closed the cold intake valve. (See Step 3)
  12. Remove and rinse the pre-filter.
  13. Reattach the pre-filter.
  14. Connect the other end of the cold side hose to the pump.
  15. Add your descaling solution to the bucket.
Choice 1: 1 quart Chromex + 1 gallon water Choice 2: 3-4 gallons of white vinegar
  16. Re-check all connections.
  17. [OPTIONAL STEP: Mark the fill level with tape (not shown in short video)]
  18. Turn on the pump by plugging it into a GFCI/grounded socket.
  19. Run the pump for 45-60 minutes.
Periodically check your bucket to ensure water level isn’t changing. If water level is rising, your cold side isn’t fully closed (see step 3). If the water level is dropping, the hot side isn’t fully closed (see step 4).
  20. When finished (45-60 minutes), unplug the pump.
  21. Disconnect the hose from the pump. Remove pump from bucket.
  22. Empty bucket
  23. Close the cold side service valve.
  24. Prepare to flush the tank with fresh water by attaching a garden hose to the hot side hose & running it to the garden OR get empty bucket(s) ready to fill.
  25. When ready to do the clean water flush, open the cold water intake valve.
    a. Water will flow into the machine, and then exit via the red hose.
    b. Run for 3-5 minutes or approx. 25 gallons of water.
  26. When done flushing, close the cold water intake valve.
  27. Open the Cold side service valve.
  28. Let the tank empty itself via the hoses.
  29. Check pre filter again. Rinse, if needed, and reconnect.
  30. Close both the hot and cold water service valves.
  31. Remove both hoses.
  32. Close the service valve caps on both red and blue side.
  33. Open both the hot and cold water flow valves.
  34. Turn on the hot water from a faucet inside your house. Ensure water flow. (Water will be cold).
  35. Plug in the tank, and turn on the gas.
  36. Check hot water at sink (Water should begin to heat now).

Alright! That is all we have for today!
