Throwback Turtle Thursday: Fort Lauderdale 2015 Day 2

This is part of a series of trips or destination that I have been to in the past. One of the main reasons why I started this blog was because I started keeping a travel journal, so I have many stories and places saved written down. I have visited both fun and interesting places that I really want to share so here goes…

Day 2

Dear Adventure Avenue,

We started our day eating breakfast at the hotel. Then we went swimming at the pool, and from there, the beach right across the street. The water was very very warm at the beach – bath tub temperature.

Later, we were going to walk to a drugstore but then we saw a trolley that for two dollars in all ($1 per person) we could get there faster and easier. We had planned on going to CVS because it was closer, but unfortunately the driver didn’t stop and we went a lot farther. We ended up stopping at Walgreens and going across the street to Shoula’s Burgers. I got a cheeseburger and Grand-mere got a California Burger with chicken instead of beef. It looked good.

There was a nail salon next to it so we decided to get our nails done. We both got coral paint. (Yet another perk to travelling with Grand-mere.)

Unfortunately we missed the trolley so opposed to waiting another half hour we took a fifteen dollar cab back.

For dinner we ate at the sixth floor restaurant. I had BBQ chicken flatbread. The crust was a little too hard for me.

At 7pm we got the call we’d been waiting for.

The turtle habitat place (S.T.O.P.) called and said we could come and watch the turtles hatching even though they were at capacity.

We took a fifteen dollar pedicab to get there.

At the habitat, we watched a few short clips and listened to a fascinating presentation by Holly. After that we walked to the beach with Holly (Who’s amazing btw). We were sitting by the turtle nest waiting for another turtle helper when Holly said she needed to look at another nest, and it’s a good thing too…

She came back running saying, “Come quick! They’re hatching!”

I ran all the way there.

It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. To see so many itty bitty turtles come out of their nest…. was just unbelievable.

The hatchlings were leatherbacks I believe. We learned that lots of turtles get disoriented by the city lights. 87 turtles hatched and of those 37 were disoriented by the lights.

Unfortunately some people kept using their flash on their phones to take pictures (even though they were told not to!). Grand-mere and I, of course, did not. We didn’t want to further disrupt the turtles. (Light from the city disorients the turtles.)

During the waiting time, Grand-mere and I talked to Holly and we learned that Holly had worked with chimpanzees that knew sign language. She recommended a book called Next of Kin. (Side-note: I have since read it and I loved it! I highly recommend it).

We didn’t see another nest hatch that night and walked home at 11:30. It was quite dark and we passed by a number of booming bars.

Signing off, until tomorrow,

A

PS from the present: I apologize for the lack of pictures. Time has lost some, as well as the fact that I was not a very prolific photo taker in 2015.
