The Story of Cassian: From Pound Puppy to Petite Princess

Dear Adventure Avenue,

I’m a dog person – always have been and always will be. There’s something about dogs that always makes me happy. And well, I have a story to tell you about my pound puppy turned petite princess, Cassian.

Cassian attempting to wear a small Barbie crown.

Which came first: the dog or the name?

Now for most people (I’d assume) the dog comes first because you have to see it’s personality to make sure it’ll fit, but….

That wasn’t the case for my petite princess pup!

I remember it exactly. It was our last day on our 2018 Boston trip. We were eating pizza and talking about our future dog. Our gentle giant, Nemo (yes, like the fish) had passed away a couple months ago, and we were ready for a new dog.

Here’s Nemo, always happy as can be:

As you probably know I loveeee Star Wars (I even made a Star Wars dresser!), so of course I wanted to name our dog after a Star Wars character. My dad was in, but my mom needed some convincing. Then my dad said, “How about Cassian? Like from Rogue One. Then if we get a girl we could call her Cassie.”

Everyone loved that idea!

All that was left was to find said puppy from a pound.

Enter the Four Yellow Labrador Pound Puppies

One day 4 Labrador Retriever puppies popped up: Weiss, Ruby, Yang, and one other puppy whose name is escaping me. They were at a shelter in Norco. They would be auctioned off because they were puppies.

We went to see them to make sure one of them would be a good fit before we went through the trouble of the auction.

We discovered Ruby was a barker and two of them had really bad scabs on the top of their heads as if they had been scraped on a too small kennel. Weiss didn’t have a bad scab on her head.

The Auction

The day of the auction arrived. I couldn’t go, but my mom, brother, and a friend of my mom’s went so we would have extra shots at the pups. Well my brother didn’t count as one, so we only had two numbers: 13 and 14. My mom was 13.

The first person is picked. They pick Ruby.

Then another person is called. The only two left now are Weiss and Yang.

“13”

My mom’s number was called! Unlucky 13 was our lucky number as my mom picked out Weiss – soon to be renamed Cassian.

She wasn’t ours yet as she had to get fixed at a local veterinary hospital.

July 11, 2018

That afternoon my mom, brother, and I drove to get her. She was so small with her big cone of shame.

I almost passed out in the parking lot – I don’t do well hearing about graphic medical procedures and I had the misfortune of hearing one in the hospital. But this story is about Cassie so I digress…

But Cassian was finally ours in a little cardboard box with a soft blanket laying next to my brother in the middle seat of our car.

Today

She is know by many names. “Ma petite” (because of course I speak French to her), Princess Cass, Miss Cass, and most often Sassy Cassie. She has more personality and sass than any dog I’ve ever known.

But she loves to play with her tennis balls, her pineapple, and any toy she can get her paws on. She’ll even do some yoga! Okay or maybe she’s just trying to get you to play with her pineapple! 😉

Oh and don’t even think of leaving a sock on the floor! She loves those!

I hope you have enjoyed this story of my dog, Cassian! If you want to see more of her, you can follow @asanimalsadventure on Instagram

Paws of love,

A

and Cassie
