What to do in Washington D.C. – 2021 Historical Adventure Day 4

This post is part of a 6-day series of the things that my family of four did while we were in Washington D.C. in November of 2021. I will give an account of the things we liked and things that we didn’t like as much. In this way, you can plan the best trip to Washington D.C. (and surrounding areas)!

November 23, 2021

Dear Adventure Avenue,

My mom and I got up first this morning and decided to walk to Corner Bakery and Starbucks for breakfast since our favorite waitress wouldn’t be working today (also it was going to be a significantly less expensive breakfast).

It was very cold today at 38 degrees F – especially for us Californians.

Breakfast consisted of oatmeal for me, panini egg sandwiches for my mom and dad, and my brother got pancakes.

At Starbucks, I got a royal English breakfast latte, we got my dad a coffee, and my brother a hot chocolate. My mom got a Diet Coke at Corner Bakery.

The National Archives

We opted to take an Uber to the National Archives instead of walking the 20 minutes to the museum. The Archives turned out to be a lot more interesting than we expected. We thought it was just going to be the Declaration of Independence, but it was so much more!

Unfortunately, we were unable to take pictures at the Archives, but my highlight of the trip was seeing Almanzo Wilder’s Dakota territory Homestead document.

The National Museum of American History

This museum was fairly disappointing because we thought we were going to see more popular culture artifacts. For instance, there’s a Star Wars Costume exhibit that wasn’t on display but is an exhibit I’d love to see.

We did see this dress from Crazy Rich Asians:

There was a giant room entirely dedicated to Dorothy’s Ruby red slippers. We thought they could’ve added a little more to that exhibit.

I did enjoy seeing the First Lady’s clothing collections, but there were way too many people in that exhibit to enjoy it properly.

The American innovations were interesting to look at, but all in all a lot of the exhibits seemed like things we’d just seen in the other museums we’d visited.

Lyft to Chipotle near our hotel

We compared Uber and Lyft throughout our trip, and this was the one occasion where Lyft was cheaper, so we took Lyft to the Chipotle near our hotel. Then we walked the food back to the room to eat, as it was a short walk back to the hotel.

Hotel Shenanigans

We watched a little General Hospital on our Amazon Fire Stick – affiliate link here, then played some cards, and relaxed before heading out to dinner.

Martin’s Tavern

We went to Martin’s Tavern for dinner which has a lot of historical significance.

A friend had told me about this place and that the rarebit was very good, so I had that. It was delicious but very, very rich! I couldn’t eat it all by myself.

My parents split a steak. My dad can’t stop raving about their clam chowder that had so many clams. He said it was better than any chowder he’d had in Boston.

Dessert was a delicious bread pudding. I normally don’t like dried fruits in my desserts, but I made an exception for this dessert!

Sincerely,

A
